Commercial sitework in San Bernardino and the corridor

Pads, footings, trenches and yard base for the small end of the Inland Empire logistics corridor, priced by the hour or by the yard.

Shandin Excavation routes small commercial excavation across San Bernardino, Colton, Fontana and Rialto to a licensed Class A or C-12 contractor with the insurance your general contractor asks for. The residential pages on this site carry published ranges; commercial work is quoted from the civil drawings after a site visit, because the scope varies too much for a table.

Scope that fits a valley excavation crew

  1. 1

    Pad grading and footings

Shop additions, tilt up annexes, equipment pads. Cut and fill to the civil elevations, compaction to the geotech spec, footing excavation to the structural drawings.

  2. 2

Fire water, sewer and utility trenches

Trenches for fire service lines, sewer connections, electrical duct banks and storm drain laterals, with shoring past five feet and bedding to the utility’s standard.

  3. 3

    Yard and lot base

Trailer yards and equipment lots along Jurupa, Slover and La Cadena: strip, grade, place and compact aggregate base ahead of paving.

  4. 4

    Demolition and clearing

Small structure demolition, slab removal, asphalt removal and haul off, with the asbestos survey handled before anything comes down.

  5. 5

    Drainage structures

Retention basin cuts, swales and catch basin excavation to the civil plan.

What a commercial bid needs from you

The civil grading plan with elevations, the geotechnical report, the utility plan and the schedule. With those four documents a contractor quotes by the cubic yard for earthwork and by the foot for trenches and holds the number. Without them the quote is hourly and the risk sits with you. Licensing classifications are on the CSLB site, trench safety follows Cal/OSHA Title 8 section 1541, and the residential table on the cost guide gives a sense of hourly and haul rates even for a commercial scope.

Commercial questions

What size commercial jobs fit?

The small end of the Inland Empire corridor: a pad for a shop addition, footings for a tilt up annex, a fire water or sewer trench for a warehouse, trailer yard base, a retention basin cut. Mass grading a 40 acre site is a different class of contractor.

How is commercial work priced?

By the hour with a machine and operator at $165 to $285, or by the cubic yard for cut, fill and export after a site visit and a look at the civil drawings. Mobilization, shoring and compaction testing are line items.

Can you provide the insurance certificate my GC wants?

Yes. The licensed contractor who takes the job carries general liability and workers compensation and names the GC or owner as additional insured on request. CSLB Class A or C-12 licensing is standard.

Do you work on prevailing wage jobs?

Some of the referral contractors do, for small public agency work. Say so on the first call because it changes which contractor the job goes to.
